Unfortunately, you CAN’T stop your horse from getting worms!
Horses will ALWAYS have worms.
Even in the best-kept pasture and cleanest stables!
But you CAN reduce the risk of infestation.
Why do you need to prevent infestation?
Routine worming, without testing first, has led to massive resistance to worming drugs.
If this continues we could reach a point where we no longer have effective drugs available.
So how do you reduce the risk?
Horse’s pick up worms from their pasture and forage. So we have to reduce the number they could pick up as much as possible.

Here are our top Do’s and Don’t’s:
DO
- Poo pick your horse’s field regularly. If you can do this daily that’s great, but if not, a couple of times a week is good.
- Keep your muck heap away from stables, shelters and feeding areas.
- Keep feed and water containers clean.
- Keep stables clean. Not just mucking out – scrub walls and floors regularly too!
- Feed from containers if you can, rather than from the ground.
DON’T
- Overstock your horse’s pasture. If your horse is in a field with others make sure there is enough grazing for them all. 1.5 acres per horse is recommended.
- Offer hay as food that has come into contact with used bedding in the stable.
What else can you do to help your horse?
Don’t assume your horse doesn’t have worms because you can’t SEE any.
A targeted worming program is the best way to keep track of and control your horse’s worm burden.
- Always TEST regularly as part of a targeted worming program.
- Only TREAT when necessary.
- Make sure you treat with the CORRECT wormer for the BURDEN.
