How to measure your horse’s weight

So you need to know how much your horse weighs! Maybe so you can calculate your feed, discover how much wormer to give or perhaps you’re trying to calculate the weight to travel your horse.

There are 3 Main ways to discover how much your horse weighs

1 – Using a weighbridge (most accurate but who has one at home so you will need to organise a visit)

2 – Using a Weigh Tape (gives an approximate weight easy to do)

3 – Using a Soft Household Tape Measure and our FREE Body Weight Calculator (Quick easy and can be done today)

Measuring horses weight with a weigh bridge

USING A WEIGHBRIDGE

This is the most accurate way but would need someone who has a weighbridge.

Many feed companies have one and will often arrange a visit.

Measuring horse weight with a weightape

USING A WEIGH TAPE (gives approximate weight)

Simply:

🐴 Make sure your horse is standing on a flat area

🐴 Hold the “0” end of the tape + pass the other end over the horse’s back

🐴 Bring the end of the tape under your horse, around his barrel (where the girth sits)

🐴 Pull the tape to meet the “0” end + read the weight

🐴 Use that to calculate the amount of wormer needed

We hope this helps you discover your horses weight. Remember its really hard to guestimate and most of the time horse owners underestimate weight (rarely overestimate).

If you are calculating the amount of wormer to give you need to allow for spit out (yep they do spit it out!) so better to overdose than underdose.
