New Study Reveals Seasonal Tapeworm Risks for UK Horses — and Why Seasonal Testing Matters

A new scientific study has offered the clearest picture yet of how and when UK horses are exposed to tapeworm infection, and it’s changing the way owners think about testing.

Researchers from the Royal Veterinary College monitored horses, pastures, and the microscopic soil mites that carry the parasite Anoplocephala perfoliata across three UK yards for 14 months.

Their findings highlight clear seasonal patterns — and reinforce the importance of targeted, evidence-based testing using saliva diagnostics like EquiSal® Tapeworm.

The Hidden Carriers: Mites on the Move

Tapeworms rely on tiny oribatid mites that live in soil and pasture. These mites act as intermediate hosts, carrying the parasite’s larvae as they crawl across the grass.

Horses become infected when they accidentally ingest these mites while grazing.

The study confirmed that while mites are present all year, their activity — and infection risk — rises sharply in warmer months. Tapeworm DNA was detected most frequently in mites collected between March and September.

What This Means for Horse Owners

The research provides strong evidence that spring and autumn testing is crucial.

Testing early in the year helps identify infected horses before they shed eggs onto the pasture, reducing the chance of contaminating grazing areas just as mites become more active.

The findings also suggest that grazing management plays a big role, horses that were turned out for full days were more likely to test positive than those with part-time grazing schedules.

And while testing showed year-round infection, the lack of paddock hygiene (no dung removal) reinforced a key point: clean paddocks reduce reinfection risk.

Testing Brings Confidence and Clarity

Using the EquiSal® Tapeworm test, saliva samples from horses were analysed throughout the study to monitor exposure levels.

The results helped owners see how real-world management habits affect infection risk — without relying on outdated, calendar-based worming routines.

It’s a clear reminder that modern worm control is about testing, not guessing.

Why This Matters for the Future

Seasonally targeted testing helps owners:
✅ Reduce unnecessary worming
✅ Minimise drug resistance
✅ Keep horses healthier long-term

With evidence like this, the industry is moving toward smarter, data-driven parasite control and EFECS is proud to make that science simple, practical, and affordable for UK horse owners.

In Summary

Spring isn’t just the start of the grazing season — it’s also when tapeworm risk quietly rises.
By testing with EquiSal® Tapeworm, owners can make confident, informed decisions that protect both their horses and their land.

Take control order your EquiSal® Tapeworm test today and make testing the start of your season, not an afterthought.
