Wondering when you should test and treat your horse for tapeworm?
It used to be the case we would just give a wormer for tapeworm…
BUT we DO NOT advise this anymore as tapeworms are becoming resistant to the drugs!
And why give your horse unnecessary chemicals?
The advice now is to not treat for tapeworm unless you have a positive test result for tapeworm.
That way we are not contributing to the rise in resistance!
When Should you Test for Tapeworm?
You can test for tapeworm any time of year, but the best time is in the autumn and the spring.

Why can’t I just give my horse a wormer, without testing?
I can never stress enough the importance of TESTING + not just reaching for the wormer!
We have such little resistance left to the drugs currently available.
If we continue to worm our horses when they don’t need it we’ll end up with nothing to treat them with when they DO need it.
So we MUST TEST + ONLY TREAT WHEN NECESSARY!

When else should I test my horse for worms?
We advise you to worm count approximately every 8-10 weeks. (Between March + November, inclusive.)
So roughly 4 times per year.
