All horses carry a worm or parasite burden.
Depending on the horse’s health, the specific worm infesting the horse + other factors depends on the outcome but generally…
Worm infestations can cause:
- Diarrhoea
- Colic
- Weight loss
- Damage the intestinal tract
- Dull coat
- Poor growth
- Respiratory issues
- Anaemia
- Death
- Skin sores
- Itching bottoms
- Poor performance
To prevent worms causing your horse issues, it is NOT recommended to worm all year round or routinely anymore!
Worming all year round is causing the worms to become resistant to the active ingredients that kill the worms!
The question you need to ask instead of:
“How many times a year do I need to worm?”
or
“What wormer should I give my horse?”
should be:
1 – What worms does my horse have?
2 – Where shall I buy a worm test kit?
3 – Based on the results from my test what do I need to do for my horse?
Here at EFECS, you aren’t just buying the test + result. The service + advice comes as standard from our SQP, or Specialist Equine Health Adviser, Clare.
